Life in Gaza
Despite repeated international attempts to establish peace, the conflict between Palestine and Israel is still unresolved, making it the world’s longest refugee crisis. More than 40 percent of the 1.7 million Palestinians living within the West Bank and Gaza are refugees. There is also a power struggle in Palestine between Hamas, which seeks the destruction of Israel and controls Gaza, while the Fatah party controls the West Bank. The economy of Gaza has eroded, partly because of tight trade restrictions with Israel, and much of the country is reliant on international aid. In December 2008, the Israeli government launched a military offensive against Gaza to stop Hamas from firing rockets into the country. The offensive, which lasted approximately three weeks, killed hundreds and displaced thousands of civilians
Poverty has dramatically worsened since 2000; access to jobs, schools, and medical care is hampered by hundreds of checkpoints and roadblocks. In Gaza half of the population is under age 18.There is also a serious lack of adequate emergency and primary health care, particularly for women and young children in rural areas.
MedCorp has been working in the Palestinian Territories since 2006. Since then, we have implemented programmes in both Gaza and the West Bank, increasing access to emergency and primary health care.
